Why do we need to read the Bible

Books of the BibleI get asked this question often and today I found a great post by John Piper that explains it well.  The reason pointed out here is that Jesus often settled disputes by asking the group if they had read it in the scriptures.   He pointed them back to the Word of God over and over.  When he wasn’t asking them if they had read it, he was quoting it himself as were other men of faith in the Bible.  Paul and John the Baptist both use Old Testament references over and over.

An example that will help you in our daily life, is in Mathew Chapter 4 when Jesus is tempted by the devil.  In every case Jesus uses the words of scripture to fight with and cast out Satan.   To be able to use the words of the Bible, you have to know what it says.

Here is a link to the article from Mr. Piper that fully develops the importance of this practice.   Check it out, who knows, you may need it today!
